Top tips for being the ultimate home cinema show-off

April 30, 2008 by Insider Staff

Logitech Harmony 1000These days having a smart LCD TV and even a teeth-shatteringly mean surround sound system doesn’t cut it in the wow stakes. You need new ways to show off if you hope to be the ultimate home cinema king.

Never fear! Simply follow our simple step-by-step tips and you’ll have the local multiplex worried in no time.

Step 1: How big is a big screen?
So your friends all have big screen TVs. What’s the answer? Go even bigger of course. You could invest thousands in a larger telly than them, or you could get the same picture quality for much less using a picture perfect projector. There are heaps that’ll serve up a jumbo full HD movie experience in eye-stroking 1080p, and for less than your mates paid for their TVs too.

What’s more, motorized roll-down projector screens can’t fail to impress, and for added acceptance-factor, it’s all easily stashed away for a clutter-free living room.

Step 2: One-touch movie machines
Your home cinema set-up is most likely ultra complicated. TV or projector, DVD player, surround sound system, and with separate remotes. Cut the clutter, and grab a decent universal remote with ‘macro’ functions. One of these will let you set up complex instructions for all your kit that’ll work at the push of a single button, Bond villain style.

Get your friends over, settle them down, then turn on the TV, mute its inferior built in speakers, fire up the surround sound, and get the DVD playing, all with one touch. Showing off doesn’t get much slicker than that, and you’ll still have a free hand with which to high-five your technical supremacy.

Step 3: Gentlemen, lights!
There’s just one thing fancier than controlling all entire home cinema rig with a remote, and that’s controlling the lighting with a remote.

Check out this wall lamp from Jellephish Design, it comes with a remote (which your universal remote can imitate) so you can get the mood just right as well as starting your movies playing. Fancy a splash of colour? How about the Philips LivingColors lamp. It’s remote controlled too, so you can dim the lights, and change their colour at the same time as mastering your movie machines. Get this set up, and soon you’ll be charging for tickets.

Must have accessories
Cinema-grade popcorn – What movie experience is complete without popcorn? Grab an automatic popcorn maker and you’ll soon have your mates clamouring for a seat in your home-made movie theatre. Paper bags sold separately, and don’t blame us when it’s trodden into your carpet.

Movie-style seats – Sitting for hours is serious business. Treat your backside to the comfiest seat in the house, and recline your way through the next movie marathon in luxury.
