PS3 and Xbox 360 getting price cuts?
June 30, 2009 by Insider Staff
The Sony PS3 is to sell through its current stock of 80GB and 160GB units by this autumn, with both a price cut for the console and a revamp as the PS3 Slim arriving then, according to a normally accurate games industry “mole” based in the US.
At the same time, in America at least, Microsoft will sell through its remaining Xbox 360 Pro stock and revert to the Elite as its top-tier version of its console, according to the mole, quoted at Ars Technica. The Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite console will also get a price cut in September.
Analysts and consumers have been asking for a Sony PS3 price cut for some time now. The introduction of the Sony PS3 Slim in autumn would certainly be a good time to cut the price of existing hardware. But will Sony want to cut the price of a hardware revision? Or actually increase it, as they have done with the Sony PSP Go?
Meanwhile, it makes good sense for Microsoft to cut the price of its Xbox 360 Elite console at the same time Sony does to remain competitive. And pushing the 120GB hard drive is going to be useful to get users downloading more content.
That said, as with any story for an unnamed source, treat this as rumour… for now.
