Rugged Ricoh G600 snapper is marine tough

April 29, 2008 by Insider Staff

Ricoh G600Here at The Insider we like to see a gadget get a good shoeing and still be fit enough to come back for more. The latest toughened piece of tech to emerge on the digital camera scene is the upcoming Ricoh G600.

Ready for a hard-knock life, this rugged snapper is serious about taking top-notch shots regardless of how rough you treat it.

A muscle-bound 10-megapixel camera, the G600 is decked out in robust armour to withstand a barrage of elemental and shock abuse. Ricoh assure us it will still be snapping away after being dropped from 1.5 metre height, while its structure is so watertight it can take pictures submerged in water up to one metre. Not even pesky grains of sand and dust can knock this hard-as-nails shutterbug out of its stride.

Top talents
Kid gloves – The G600’s monster-sized buttons means it easy to reel of shots even when wearing gloves – perfect for capturing those off-piste memories.

Zoom zoom – Ricoh doesn’t skimp on the photos extras either with the G600. It’s packing an impressive 5x optical wide-angle zoom and macro close-up function that can prowl into its subjects up to 1cm away.

Clear view – The modest 2.7-inch LCD display automatically adjusts its brightness to adapt to the surrounding lighting conditions.

Coming out: May 2008

Going up against
Olympus Mju Digital 850SW Black – This eight megapixel tough-guy shooter brilliantly combines a rugged water, shock and temperature-proof metallic body with a stylish slimline design.

Vivitar ViviCam 6200W Yellow – This six megapixel yellow submarine delivers underwater action on a budget with a skin-tight rubber suit that can plunge to bends-inducing depths of ten metres.

Pentax Optio W30 – The W30 sneers in the face of water, dust and dirt with a thick skin metallic casing. It can happily take snaps three metres underwater while the protected lens can thrive in foggy and steamy conditions. Its seven megapixel CCD and 3x optical zoom aren’t to be sniffed at either.
