Microsoft free antivirus software “coming soon”

June 16, 2009 by Insider Staff

Microsoft MorrowMicrosoft Morro, the company’s latest security software, looks set to sound the death knell for payable antivirus packages by hitting the shelves soon with a price tag of… free!

Currently being trialled internally, Microsoft Morrow is the company’s second attempt at antivirus software after Windows Live OneCare, which will be discontinued. According to the BBC, Microsoft has said that a beta version of Morrow will be made available “soon”, although no official date has been announced as of yet.

While Morro will tackle viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans, it will still lack some of the utilities you find on paid-for antivirus software, such as parental locks. Still, for the grand price of zero Sterling, we’re more than willing to forgo that. We’ll keep you posted as to when Microsoft Morro becomes available.
