Twitter and iTunes support for Palm Pre

June 1, 2009 by Insider Staff

Palm PreThe Palm Pre was shown off at the D7 conference yesterday. Palm promised some ‘previously unseen’ features and it didn’t disappoint. Amongst other things, iTunes and Twitter support will be built right in.

Palm Pre hype hasn’t focused much on the multimedia capabilities of the new phone – in particular how users would get music on to their new handsets. The big surprise up Palm’s corporate sleeve is built-in iTunes support in the form of Palm Media Sync. This enables the Palm Pre to synch music tracks with an iTunes library on a Mac or PC. The Pre can’t speak Apple DRM, however, so only recently-purchased iTunes tracks will be synchable.

Assuming you don’t want to use iTunes, however, you will be able to side-load tracks by simply plugging the Pre in to your computer. The Pre automatically mounts as a mass storage device so you can drag and drop stuff onto it, old-school.

The other notable feature was Twitter integration. The Palm Pre’s Universal Search allows you to trawl through the web and your personal data (contacts, documents, etc.) from one place. Twitter support has been added so you will be able to search through the twitterati’s collective knowledge in much the same way as with search startup Topsy.
