Acer to bring out Android phone this year

May 22, 2009 by Insider Staff

AcerAcer is to release an Android smartphone before the end of this year, Acer’s head of phones has confirmed.

Acer has teased us and evaded questions over its rumoured Android smartphone for some time but head of smartphones Aymar de Lencquesaing has finally admitted that a phone is in the works.

“Late 2009, we’re releasing a smartphone… full touch, at the price of feature phones today,” de Lencquesaing told the Reuters Technology Summit.
Acer has only been in the smartphone business since 2008 but has already got a small range of Windows Mobile devices. The company says that it aims to sieze 6% to 7% of the smartphone market by 2012-2013 by producing commodity-level devices. Android can only help with this – the low licensing costs and rapid development makes it ideal for low-cost devices.

No specifications are available yet – as soon as we hear anything you will be the first to know.
