Spotify coming to iPhone by year’s end
May 18, 2009 by Insider Staff
An iPhone version of Spotify, the free music streaming service, has long been rumoured, but the company’s top dog says it’s on the way, and will be out as soon as this year!
Speaking at The Great Escape music conference in Brighton, Spotify founder Daniel Ek said that the streaming service, which has more than 1m users, is working on a Spotify iPhone apps, and with any luck, it should be with us by Christmas.
“I definitely hope that it will be before the end of this year that we’ll do something which allows people to bring the music with them,” he said. Ek also said that Spotify should roll out to other mobile platforms: “We want to be everywhere. We won’t only do one device.”
Ek did confirm that like incoming apps which use the Spotify API, the Spotify iPhone and mobile versions would require Spotify Premium membership, which costs £9.99 a month. If the iPhone version is any bit as good as the desktop client though, that should be a price worth forking out for.
