Spotify to launch mobile version?

May 12, 2009 by Insider Staff

SpotifyWe already know Spotify, the free music streaming service, is looking to launch a mobile version, but the startup is now in talks with the mobile networks to offer it as part of a package.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek has said that the company is in talks with network operators and handset makers to offer a mobile version of Spotify as part of a package with new phones, suggesting that the industry realises how popular the service could prove, despite how much data it threatens to chomp through on 3G.

Spotify opened up its API last month, libSpotify, so a whole host of apps will be on the way, and you can bet a mobile app will be taking pride of place among them, not least the rumoured iPhone Spotify app.

There are no more details just yet as to whether a mobile Spotify will be subscriber only or free with adverts, but we’ll be watching Ek’s can closely to see if any more beans fall out.
