1,000 apps for Nokia Ovi Store launch

Ovi Store – the new Symbian app store from Nokia – will launch this month with an impressive line-up. Over 1000 applications and games will be available for your downloading pleasure.

Ovi Store is nearly upon us. Although there is still no firm launch date, Nokia’s MOSH application sharing service is due to close today to make room for its more commercially minded successor.

Speaking to EWeek, Nokia spokesman Eric John said that thousands of applications were being vetted by Nokia and that the Ovi Store would have at least 1000 or more applications on launch day.

Ovi Store is widely seen as Nokia’s response to the phenomenal success of the iPhone App Store. Acknowledging a slight debt to Apple, John said, “We’re glad they are having the success they are having with App Store, because now I don’t have to explain what the term ‘app’ means.”

Developers will be able to set their own prices for applications (including ‘free’) with Nokia hoovering up 30% of the take to cover distribution costs.
