Vodafone launches UK iPhone portal

April 28, 2009 by Insider Staff

VodafoneVodafone has just launched an iPhone portal in the UK, sparking fresh rumours around the country that Apple’s Messiah Mobile could soon be made available to the phone operators customers in the near future.

The iPhone is currently only distributed by O2 and the Carphone Warehouse in the UK, with O2 the sole official operator. But the news that Vodafone has launched its own iPhone portal in the UK could suggest that is about to change.

Apple had already been in talks with Verizon (a company co-owned by Vodafone) concerning the introduction of the iPhone to its network in the States, and Vodafone already carries the iPhone in other countries, so it wouldn’t be too far a stretch to imagine a similar situation occurring in the UK.

Currently Vodafone is just saying that its iPhone portal is “available to all iPhone users, including on-Vodafone customers”. The Vodafone iPhone portal lets visitors build a custom page by dragging widgets around, and includes UK-centric content from Sky News, the Premier League and the BBC. Is that UK-specific content another tell-tale sign that O2’s about to lose its iPhone exclusivity in Britain?

So, will Vodafone soon be distributing the iPhone in the UK? Only time will tell…
