Top 50 DAB radios dissected
April 15, 2008 by Insider Staff
Fuzzy FM broadcasts have given way to the crisp tones of DAB and a wealth of digital radio stations.
There are almost as many quality DAB radios out there too.
So this week we’ve infiltrated the DAB barracks to inspect the best digital radio recruits lined up in the Top 50 list.
Top of the tree
Pure EVOKE 2XT
Best price: £85.94 on 15 April 2008
Pure has held on to the number one spot with its popular EVOKE radio through that trusty killer combo of value and quality. The wooden panels look the business and give a sturdy feel to the casing, which in turn gives the EVOKE a bigger voice. This is one of the few DAB radios that can fill a large room without distorting like a Sex Pistols guitar solo.

Rising star
Tangent Quattro
Best price: £145.42 on 15 April 2008
Tangent’s radios are always worth a look (and listen), consistently delivering stylish designs to encase exciting features. This recent release is ahead of its time and likely to climb the charts when everyone cottons on to its smart Internet radio skills and podcasting talents.

Unsung hero
Philips AJ300D
Best price: £55.94 on 15 April 2008
It’s surprising to see Philips right at the bottom of the list when it has so much to offer. The iPod dock integrates particularly well with the seductively sculpted body of the DAB radio. And with your iPod in place, you’re hit with heaps of functionality at your fingertips. The big speaker does a great job of dispersing the sound too.
Up against: TEAC R1
Loved by experts
TEAC RX1
Best price: £104.95 on 15 April 2008
Quite unlike its bulky brother, the TEAC R1, this flat radio can be mounted quite happily on the wall thanks to its lightweight low-profile design. The unique flat speaker can still deliver the DAB jewels though, hence the universally gushing reviews it has garnered from the experts.
