Facebook data to be made available for new apps
April 27, 2009 by Insider Staff
Facebook is opening up its database beyond existing APIs to allow developers greater access to profiles. What that means in a language that’s not just understood by tech-heads, is that all your data on Facebook (including photos, videos, notes and comments) will be handed over to developers keen to build a new generation of social networking apps (permission granted, of course).
Facebook is calling this an “open technology standard”, and it looks like it will put the social networking site in direct competition with Twitter, as it will allow the company to present their data in different ways – in a similar way to all the Twitter apps on the web already do. It could unleash a wave of exciting new apps and allows users to do more with the media they upload, but is Facebook just opening up another pivacy-rights can of worms?
The Wall Street Journal claims that Facebook will confirm details of this new approach today. It’s thought that a new breed of apps, tying photos, video, and other content to other data, and even sites outside Facebook’s control, will emerge as developers are given the new tools.
This comes on the back of last week’s news that YouTube is following Twitter’s lead with YouTube Realtime. Looks like everyone wants to be like Twitter…
