YouTube Realtime: just like Twitter but with video
April 23, 2009 by Insider Staff
Not one to rest on its highly successful laurels, YouTube is following Twitter’s lead and introducing YouTube Realtime – an update to the site that’ll allow for real time notifications of what your friends are watching. Is no site safe from the lure of social networking?
We’ve known for a while that Facebook has been working on realtime streaming of status updates (a bit like a Twitter client) on the homepage, but now YouTube is also following Twitter’s lead with YouTube Realtime.

So what’s the skinny? Well, currently YouTube Realtime is just a toolbar that YouTube is testing. It shows which of your friends are online, what they’re watching (so, no oops celebrity clips for you anymore!),and what – if any – comments they’re leaving about the videos.
Whether you’re watching a dog surfing or – possibly the greatest YouTube clip ever – Michael Schumacher driving his Ferrari into his lollypop man in the pits, clips will go viral that much quicker.
YouTube Realtime is invite only at the moment. So if you’re one of the lucky golden ticket holders, share the wealth and invite others!
