Green gadgets for Earth Day

April 22, 2009 by Insider Staff

Earth DayIt’s Earth Day folks. A day of reflection about all the bad things we’re doing to the planet and what we could do to improve matters. The Ice sheets are melting folks, and East Anglia may soon sink to the bottom of the North Sea. If that doesn’t worry you, the how about the threat of another Al Gore documentary? Thought so. Here are five bits of must-have eco-tech to help save Mother Earth!

Samsung Blue EarthSamsung Blue Earth (£TBC)
Remember the Samsung Blue Earth? This is the eco-phone that’s made of recycled materials and charges using the sun’s energy. A mere 10-14hours in the sun would leave you looking like David Dickinson, but it gives this blower four hours talk time. Natch!

Bosch KGH 36S52Bosch KGH 36S52 (£500)
Cool boxes are generally uncool when it comes to eco-friendliness. The Bosch KGH 36S52 fridge-freezer, however, is very cool. Available in a number of colours, this 303 litre fridge-freezer burns just 277kWh per year and stays frost-free no matter what!

Samsung UE46B7000WWSamsung UE46B7000WW (£1,600)
The Samsung UE46B7000WW is a 46-inch LCD television that’s as eco-friendly as we are gadget-friendly. It has backlight control, which is made up of LEDs (rather than fluorescent bulbs), which results in a 40 per cent cut in energy use. Oh, and it’s Full-HD of course.

Bye Bye StandbyBye Bye Standby (£23)
Kill the standby folks. Leaving gadgets on standby costs around £900 million in wasted energy each year. The Bye Bye Standby cuts off the power to plugged devices when they’re not in use – cutting the power and the waste!

Honda FCX ClarityHonda FCX Clarity ($600 per month hire)
Driving’s a necessity. We get it. But how about using the Honda FCX Clarity? It’s a hydrogen-fuelled, fuel-cell car. What that means is there are no exhaust emissions – just good, old H20. So good in fact, we’d water the garden with it. Only available for hire in the States and Japan at the moment.
