Sharp Mebius PC-NJ70A gets second screen!

Ah, the Sharp Mebius PC-NJ70A. This is how we reckon the board room meeting went, when Sharp was coming up with their netbook: Head honcho: “If you’re going to make a netbook, you’d better dam well make sure it has a gimmick.” “Designer: “Oh, it’s got a gimmick, alright!” Said gimmick? An LCD trackpad !

That’s right folks, the Sharp Mebius netbook (just unveiled in Japan), has a 854×480 resolution screen on the trackpad – it’s not too dissimilar to the one we saw on the Asus Eee Wi-Fi keyboard at CES. Given that netbooks often suffer in the lack of screen space department, this is a fantastic solution as it’ll allow you to browse files and run apps on the second screen.

The inside of the Sharp Mebius PC-NJ70A isn’t quite as revolutionary, unfortunately. It’s the same old standard fare that we’ve been getting with netbooks since the beginning of (netbook) time: 10.1 inch screen, 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive. But we can put up with that, because of THAT gimmick!

There’s no release date yet, not even in Japan, but it does have a price tag of 80,000 yen (or £560 in Sterling), which seems quite high for a netbook. Still, it does have a gimmick…
