Grand Theft Auto IV carjacks PS3 on April 29

April 14, 2008 by Insider Staff

GTA IVGTA IV, the most controversial and eagerly anticipated game of the year finally gets tooled up for a worldwide release.

Rockstar’s street smart saga has been given the full next-gen hi-def treatment, and it’s PS3 debut is hotly tipped to smash ‘n’ grab the title of best game of 2008.

Rockstar’s subversive GTA franchise generates hysteria, headlines and record sales with each incarnation, but the latest outing on PS3, the best yet, has been an agonising wait.

After missing its 2007 launch, fans feared further delays, but thankfully, GTA IV was deemed important enough for a global release on the last Tuesday in April. This time you play an Eastern European gangster called Nicko Bellic who’s just arrived in Liberty City (a thinly disguised New York) with ruthless ambition and a past so shady you really don’t want to ask.

Top talents

City Slicker – The setting this time is an ultra-realistic new take on the classic Liberty City, that’s clearly modeled on New York, complete with muggers, yellow cabs and hapless hotdog sellers.

Russian gangster – You play Nico Bellic, a shady character who’s just arrived from Eastern Europe with a determination to take over the seedy underworld of Liberty City and generally behave very, very badly.

Musical Youth – As in all the GTA games, every car you jack has a pumping stereo, only this time, you’ll be able to buy each track in just a few clicks.

Best price (pre-order): £36.99 on 14 April 2008.

Closest rivals
Assassin’s Creed (PS3) – Stealth is name of the game here as you creep around castles like a medieval John Rambo, dispatching key figures with ruthless efficiency.

Burnout Paradise (PS3) – Almost as irresponsible as GTA IV, this racer will have you tearing up public highways and deliberately throwing your ride into oncoming traffic to see how much high definition mayhem you can create.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PS3) – If you ever watch Channel Four News and wish you were out there fighting alongside our boys in a modern conflict, this is the nearest you’ll get. It’s realistic and uncompromisingly violent.
