Nokia 5800 touchscreen upgrade on its way!

April 17, 2009 by Insider Staff

Nokia 5800The Nokia 5800 is an awesome phone. Fact (as Rafa Benitez might say). But owners of the Finnish company’s touchscreen handset may have wished they waited a few months as Taiwanese component suppliers (yes, them!) have said that Nokia is planning to give the device a better touchscreen!

The Nokia 5800 currently uses a resistive touchscreen rather than a capacitive one. But that looks all set to change if this component supplier is to be believed. The source, speaking to DigiTimes said: “Nokia’s initial orders for capacitive touch panels will be enough for the production of two million 5800 handsets, with shipments of the new version to begin in May-June.” Nice.

So what’s the difference between the screens? Capacitive screens are generally seen as having more sensitivity, more resistance and better response times. They’re also better at supporting multitouch, but you’d never hear us suggesting that Nokia might be planning to stick multitouch in the 5800. Honest.
