iPhone gaming has Sony and Nintendo “freaking out!”
April 16, 2009 by Insider Staff
Gaming on the iPhone has got Sony and Nintendo “freaking out!” That’s according to Trip Hawkins – the founder of games giant Electronic Arts (EA). So, why exactly has Apple’s PMP given the two gaming giants the willies? Read on for the full skinny…
While Nintendo has constantly denied that it sees the iPhone as a threat to the DS and DSi’s popularity, Trip sees it differently. He reckons that Apple’s all-singing, all-dancing, and now all-gaming player is”freaking out Sony and Nintendo”.
Trip, who left EA to set up game development studio Digital Chocolate, has got plenty to say on the matter, too. “It’s by far our most effective platform. We make as much money with these games on one device [the iPhone] as we do putting a game on 100 different cell phone platforms,” he told Venture Beat.
He goes on to say that it’s just the beginning as well. “Apple has sold 30 million units so far and it has created tremendous awareness. It has taken ground all over the world. But it has only penetrated one half of one percent of its total market.”
If Trip is right, and the iPhone does start to seriously eat into Nintendo and Sony’s handheld gaming market, the perceived big two will have to buck up their ideas. DSi phone and PSP 2 anyone?
