How to make Internet calls on your Sony Ericsson K810i
April 10, 2008 by Insider Staff
Using just your phone and an un-capped data tariff you can save a bundle on international phone calls. You could even get them for free if your far-away friends use VoIP too.
Here at The Insider we’ve pulled together a few simple steps to getting your K810i primed for Internet calling.
Step 1: Sort out your software
Once you’ve got an un-capped data tariff you’ll need VoIP software for your K810i. We’d recommend EQO, pronounced ‘echo’, as it’s dead fast, fuss-free and lets you make calls to landlines, mobiles and other phones or computers running the EQO software.
Download and install EQO onto your phone – if you want to use other software such as Skype then that’s fine, although few are as simple to use as EQO.
Step 2: Gather your logins!
As well as letting you call other people using EQO and landlines or mobiles, the software will let you send instant messages to your friends using MSN, AIM, Yahoo!, Google Talk, ICQ, or Jabber.
However, to make it work with any of the above chat networks, you’ll need to feed the software your login name and passwords. EQO will ask for them when it first loads up, so just tap them in, give it a couple of seconds to download your buddy lists. Soon you’ll see all your friends listed. Just click on them to start chatting, absolutely free!
Step 3: Make your first call
If your friends use EQO too then calling them will be free. Plus, you can send them text messages without paying too! To call normal phone numbers you’ll need to load your EQO account with credit, just like a pay as you go phone. You can load your account with cash from EQO’s website, but since calls cost roughly half their normal price when using VoIP we don’t expect you’ll have to do it very often!
Must have accessories
Bluetooth headset – VoIP applications work with Bluetooth headsets in exactly the same way as normal calls. It’ll mean you can drive, walk the dog, or even cook a spag boll at the same time as saving a packet.
Spare charger – The downside of using a data connection to make calls is that you could eat through your battery faster than usual. Grab a spare charger, keep it at work and you’ll never need to worry about running low on juice again!
